TV Guide Network (TVGN) investigates the rise, fall and revival of soap operas in an all-new special, Who Shot The Daytime Soap?
The In Depth Story: Despite the fact that four iconic daytime dramas were cancelled in the past five years due to sagging ratings, television's four remaining network serials have seen a tremendous surge in the last 12 months, and Web dramas featuring the daytime stars we know and love grow in popularity. In a one-hour special airing this week, TVGN has gathered together the genre's top stars, producers and critics to examine what went wrong and discuss daytime's recovery in "a passionate look at the only genre that can be riddled with bullet holes... but never die!"
Produced by Jim Romanovich (who has helmed the Daytime Emmy Awards broadcast in recent years), some of the industry heavyweights interviewed in the documentary include GH's Tristan Rogers (Robert), Robin Mattson (Heather), Sean Kanan (A.J.), Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) and former executive producer Wendy Riche; AMC's Susan Lucci (Erica), Alicia Minshew (Kendall) and Michael Lowry (Jake); talent manager Michael Bruno; and actress and Web soap pioneer Crystal Chappell (Dani, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL).
"[The daytime industry] is actually healthier now than it's been in a while," Bruno tells Soaps In Depth. "It's like when you have to get rid of weaker trees in order to let the stronger trees get even stronger." soaps, and I applaud him for believing in them and being open to another chapter in soap history, which is on-line soaps."
Who Shot The Daytime Soap? premieres on Monday, December 16, at 8 p.m. EST; encore broadcasts will air Thursday, December 19, at 10:30 a.m. EST and Friday, December 27, at 5 p.m. EST. Check local listings to see if TVGN is offered by your provider.
